The short answer to "can pavers and synthetic turf work together?" — yes, and this Old Bridge backyard shows how. Large-format concrete pavers set in a precision diamond grid of synthetic turf, wrapping the full pool deck and connecting the patio, gazebo, and outdoor kitchen into one continuous entertaining space.
Why the paver-and-turf grid works
Poolside surfaces have to solve three problems at once: drainage, heat, and slip. A solid paver field sheds water fast but bakes in July. Natural grass stays cool but turns to mud a foot from the waterline. The grid pattern splits the difference — every turf joint is a drainage channel, the turf breaks up heat build-up underfoot, and the pavers give furniture and foot traffic a dead-flat, slip-resistant surface.
It also never needs mowing against paver edges — the single most annoying maintenance chore of a natural-grass grid.
How we built it
- Excavation and base: the entire footprint was cut to a uniform depth and compacted in lifts with a crushed-stone base — one continuous base under both pavers and turf, so nothing settles at different rates.
- Layout: the diamond grid was snapped from the pool's centerline outward, so the pattern meets the coping symmetrically on both sides.
- Paver setting: large-format slabs on a screeded bedding layer, joints held to a consistent gap.
- Turf infill strips: pet-grade synthetic turf with drainage backing, cut to the grid and secured — tight seams, no curling edges.
- Detail work: clean terminations at the coping, gazebo posts, and kitchen island so the grid reads as one intentional surface.
What it costs to maintain: almost nothing
An occasional rinse and a stiff-broom pass keep the turf lanes standing tall. No mowing, no edging, no re-seeding the strip the pool splash zone always kills. The homeowners get a resort-grade surface that looks like this photo in March and in August.
