Pavers & Artificial Turf in Old Bridge, NJ

Old Bridge is where we have built some of our most involved paver-and-turf combinations: a pool deck of large-format pavers set in a diamond grid of synthetic turf, a fenced backyard where stepping-stone pavers cross a new turf lawn to a paver patio, and a circular-pattern paver patio with a fire pit and dining area bordered by turf. Here is what we built, how pavers and turf are made to work together, and what to check before you start.

Case study: a paver-and-turf grid around an Old Bridge pool

Large-format pavers set in a synthetic turf grid around a pool deck in Old Bridge, NJOur most detailed Old Bridge project wraps an entire pool deck in large-format concrete pavers set into a diamond grid of synthetic turf, tying the patio, gazebo and outdoor kitchen into one surface. The grid was snapped out from the pool’s centerline so it meets the coping symmetrically on both sides, and the turf strips are a pet-grade product with drainage backing, so every joint doubles as a drain.

Why pavers and turf get built on one base

The failure we design out on paver-and-turf jobs is uneven settling: pavers on one base, turf on another, and a lip appearing at the joint after the first winter. On the Old Bridge pool deck the whole footprint was excavated to one depth and a single crushed-stone base was compacted under both surfaces; the pavers sit on a screeded bedding layer and the turf is cut to the finished paver edges.

The payoff is a surface that never needs mowing or string-trimming along paver edges, sheds water through the turf seams, and stays level where furniture and foot traffic sit on the pavers.

Flood zones and coverage limits

Parts of Old Bridge Township run along Raritan Bay and the Cheesequake marshes. If your property is in a FEMA-mapped flood hazard area — you can check your address on FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center — New Jersey’s Flood Hazard Area rules can apply to regrading and new hard surfaces, so it is worth knowing before a large patio goes in.

Away from the water, the usual limit is lot coverage: pavers count toward your zone’s impervious-coverage cap, and how turf is counted varies by municipality. Confirm with Old Bridge’s zoning office for big hardscape additions.

Common questions

Can pavers and artificial turf be combined around a pool in Old Bridge?

Yes. Our Old Bridge pool deck sets large-format pavers in a diamond grid of drainage-backed turf. The turf joints drain water and break up heat, and the pavers give furniture a flat, slip-resistant surface.

How do you stop pavers and turf from settling at different rates?

We build one continuous compacted crushed-stone base under both surfaces instead of two separate bases, so the whole footprint moves together and no lip forms at the joints.

Do you work in Laurence Harbor and Cheesequake?

Yes. Laurence Harbor and Cheesequake are sections of Old Bridge Township, and we serve the whole township, including addresses that mail as Matawan.

How do you maintain turf strips between pavers?

An occasional rinse and a stiff-broom pass keep the turf fibers standing. There is no mowing, edging or re-seeding along the paver lines.
